To make a splash in the marketplace, an entrepreneur or business must think outside the box, creating an innovative product or service that consumers demand but is not offered by existing companies. Yet, once that business finds success and cultivates a lucrative consumer base, the company is limited in how innovative it can continue to be. This is the “Legacy Trap.”

Thomas J. Donohue is president and CEO of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Since assuming his position in 1997, Donohue has built the Chamber into a lobbying and political powerhouse with expanded influence across the globe.

Chavern serves as chair of the Chamber’s Management Committee and is responsible for day-to-day operations as well as long-term planning. This includes responsibility for a range of policy, financial, administrative, and legal operations. Lily Fu Claffee is senior vice president, chief legal officer, and general counsel of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. She leads all of the Chamber’s legal operations, including representing the organization in legal disputes, and she oversees the National Chamber Litigation Center, an incorporated public policy law firm associated with the U.S. Chamber.

Immediately prior to joining the Chamber, Claffee was a partner in the international law firm of Jones Day, where she represented corporations in federal litigation, regulatory, and national security matters.

Executive Director for the U.S. Forum for Policy Innovation

Kathryn Traver is executive director of the U.S. Forum for Policy Innovation at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. She oversees the operations functions of the U.S. Forum for Policy Innovation and the Chamber’s 501(c)(3) affiliate organizations – the National Chamber Foundation (NCF), the Institute for a Competitive Workforce (ICW) and the Business Civic Leadership Center (BCLC).

Previously, Traver was senior director of the Chamber’s corporate social responsibility affiliate, the Business Civic Leadership Center (BCLC), where she led program management and operations.

Alfonso “Al” Martinez-Fonts Jr. is a vice president at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the executive vice president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation. 

Martinez-Fonts previously was a consultant to the U.S. Chamber as president of Alfonso Martinez-Fonts, LLC, a consulting firm specializing in homeland security and international issues. He was also affiliated with Adelphi Capital, LLC, and Command Consulting Group.

Herminio A. Blanco is the founder and since 2002 has served as Chief Executive Officer of Soluciones Estratégicas Consultoría, Mexico City. Mr. Dorf has over 40 years of professional experience in executive and engineering leadership. Dorf retired from Cisco in September of 2009. He was appointed to that role in December of 2007 when Cisco Systems acquired Navini Networks where he had been President and CEO. Previously, he held the position of CEO of Austin, Texas-based Celite Systems. Prior to that position Dorf was vice president and general manager of Nortel Network’s Broadband Access Business Unit (formerly Promatory, prior to the company’s acquisition by Nortel in March of 2000). Prior to that he served as CEO of Synch Research, President of AT&T Network Systems Caribbean and Latin America, COO AT&T Paradyne, vice president of customer support for Cullinet Software and at IBM where he held several senior management positions including site general manager (Austin, Texas) and vice president of operations ROLM.
