President, Entropy Economics LLC
Bret Swanson is president of Entropy Economics LLC, a strategic research firm specializing in technology, innovation, and the global economy. He advises investors and technology companies, focusing on the Internet ecosystem and the broadband networks and applications that drive it. Swanson is also a scholar at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, where, since 2005, his research has centered on economic growth and policies that encourage it.
For eight years Swanson advised technology investors as executive editor of the Gilder Technology Report and later was a senior fellow at The Progress & Freedom Foundation, where he directed the Center for Global Innovation.
Swanson presents his research on the growth of the Internet around the globe, writes a column for Forbes, and often contributes to the editorial page of The Wall Street Journal on topics ranging from broadband networks to monetary policy. He is a trustee and chairman of the investment committee at the Indiana Public Retirement System (INPRS), the state's $27 billion pension fund. He also serves on the Innovation Advisory Council of the Lumina Foundation and is a Broadband Ambassador for the Internet Innovation Alliance.
Among other research, he has presented a new theory of the economic rise of China; projected an “exaflood” of Web video, leading to an estimated 56% compound annual growth of Internet traffic through the year 2015; and advanced a new concept linking information theory and entrepreneurial economics.
Swanson began his career as an aide to Sen. Richard Lugar and was then an economic analyst for former Rep. Jack Kemp at Empower America. He studied economics at Princeton University and now lives in Zionsville, Indiana, with his wife and four children.
