AbbVie employees’ time and talent have resulted in dramatic increases in student’s engagement STEM and interest in their futures. This has led to historic enrollment in AP and career and technical education courses.
AbbVie recognizes that the outcomes and achievements of students are also dependent on their learning environment and physical health. The company renovated schools with amenities necessary for a safe and welcoming learning environment. AbbVie built the North Chicago district’s first early childhood learning center and school-based health center and renovated the local library. By understanding the needs of students and the surrounding community, AbbVie has maximized its impact in North Chicago.
The U.S. economy will create 16 million new middle-skill jobs by 2024, yet only 43% of the workforce is trained to the middle-skill level.
Preparing a workforce trained to fill these “new collar” jobs will require new kinds of collaboration—involving governments, public school systems, community colleges, and businesses across multiple industries.
That is why IBM designed the Pathways in Technology Early College High School, or P-TECH, model. P-TECH is a public-private partnership that integrates high school and community college curricula, along with workplace experiences such as mentorship, site visits and paid internships. Students graduate with a no-cost associate degree in applied science and are first in line with their industry partner.
P-TECH launched in 2011 in Brooklyn, New York, and now spans 110 schools across eight U.S. states, Australia, Morocco, and Taiwan, with further replication underway. More than 500 businesses are participating, demonstrating that this model builds the competitive talent pipeline required for 21st Century jobs.
