Transitioning Service Members

If you (a) are on active duty and within 180 days of transition (separation or retirement) from military service and (b) have a bachelor's degree with 3+ years of leadership experience (or equivalent related experience) or an associate’s degree with 5+ years of leadership experience (or equivalent related experience), you are eligible to apply. 

Note: Fellows must be on active duty or transition leave for the duration of the 12-week program and be eligible to work following the completion of the program.

Military Spouses

If you (a) possess a DoD military ID card, (b) have current orders that show 18 months remaining in the local area, (c) have a Bachelor's degree with 3+ years of work experience or an Associate’s degree with 5+ years of work experience, you are eligible to apply. Note: You must be available to attend all classroom sessions and have transportation available.

Recently Transitioned Veterans and Military Spouses – Maryland/Washington, DC

If you (a) reside in Maryland or the District of Columbia, (b) have current orders that show 18 months remaining in the local area (spouses), (c) must have separated (retirees not eligible) within the last 4 years (veterans), and (d) have a Bachelor's degree with 3+ years of work experience or an Associate’s degree with 5+ years of work experience, you are eligible to apply.

Am I eligible to apply for a fellowship?

If you (a) are on active duty and within 180 days of transition (separation or retirement) from military service and (b) have a bachelor's degree with 3+ years of leadership experience (or equivalent related experience) or an associate’s degree with 5+ years of leadership experience (or equivalent related experience), you are eligible to apply.

Note: Fellows are ideally on active duty or transition leave for the duration of the 12-week program and be eligible to work briefly following the end of the program.

What is the time commitment and weekly schedule?

The 12-week program is held Monday through Thursday from 8 am to 5 pm. Fellows attend one week of corporate training followed by 11 weeks of on-the-job training with a company, doing training Monday through Wednesday and a day of classroom education each Thursday.

Is there a cost to be a fellow?

No, educational training is provided by our training provider Simplilearn at no cost to the service member.

How does the educational component work?

The education component of our program trains you in the skills employers want. The course curriculum includes topics such as project management, influencing without authority, and strategic communications. This training will give you an added edge in the civilian job market.

Which companies are part of the program?

More than 125 companies have participated in the program including Amazon, Compass Group, Dell, Hangar, Hospital Corporation of America (HCA), La Quinta Inns & Suites, Lockheed Martin, Maximus, Ryder, Starbucks, UPS, 7-Eleven Inc, and IBM.

Will I be offered at job at the end of the program?

Fellows will be able to demonstrate progress and success during the program. If the fellow has proven to be a good fit for their host company, they will have the opportunity to interview for an open position. Fellows will also have the chance to network and interview with other companies in the fellowship network.

What is the role of the Fellowship Program Manager?

Hiring Our Heroes provides a program manager to monitor each fellow’s participation and progress. The program manager coordinates with the fellow’s military leadership and liaisons from their host company. The program manager also ensures program effectiveness, handles inquiries from each fellow’s military leadership, and captures success and satisfaction rates from fellows and host companies.
