School governance has routinely been left out of reform discussions, and school boards often function with little oversight from the communities they serve. The simple truth is that citizens are typically unclear about what school boards do. Even those that are aware of the role school boards play don’t know how they can help. Business leaders, a constituency that understands the consequences of a broken education system, must also understand the business case for education reform.

As a business and community leader, it is crucial for you to become informed about and involved in the governance of your local school district. Decisions made by local school boards affect the quality of education delivered. A strong education system produces graduates who are prepared for higher education or the workforce. Ultimately, these graduates will become part of a skilled workforce that will attract businesses to and enhance economic vitality in your community.
