Unwrapping Ambitious Packaging Commitments in the U.S.
Increasingly, leading brands, retailers, and packaging companies are publicly committing to working toward the use of 100% reusable, recyclable, or compostable plastic packaging by 2025. At the same time that companies are setting these circular goals, the recycling industry is facing significant headwinds, including China’s restriction on the import of contaminated recycling materials and insufficient infrastructure in the U.S. Given this complex state of affairs, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation and AMERIPEN decided to host an event in September 2018, "Unwrapping Ambitious Packaging Commitments in the U.S.," with leaders across the recycling supply chain on how to best work together and overcome these challenges. The Chamber Foundation released a report that summarizes the insights from our event.
Packaging is not waste; rather, it protects products from damage, spoilage, and loss. A comprehensive strategy is needed that incorporates product design innovation, market demand for recycled materials, consumer education, strategy harmonization and stakeholder collaboration. The common themes and insights contained in this report provide ways to begin formulating that comprehensive strategy.
