Today marks the 21st International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction established by the United Nations in 1989. This year we are living through a global pandemic, another chapter of historic wildfires in California, and one of the most active Atlantic hurricane seasons on record.
Hurricane Laura made landfall early on August 27 but the amount of devastation is still being assessed. Currently there are nearly 6,000 homes declared either heavily damaged or destroyed with estimates predicting a total of 10,000 – 15,000 homes affected. As of September 1, there are more than 360,000 residents without power and utility services—including electricity—projected to take 8-12 weeks before being fully restored.
