Spotlight on the 2009 ICW Region of Excellence Award Winner
On November 9th, ICW announced that Gainesville, Florida, had received the 2009 Region of Excellence Award. This award annually recognizes an outstanding community for its sustained, collaborative approach to economic development through education and workforce development.
Community Colleges of the Future
In many regions, community colleges play a vital part in developing the workforce and enabling economic development. However, as is the case with higher education in general, there are numerous barriers to success, including issues of access, affordability, preparation, and data collection, all of which need marked improvement if the community college system is going to effectively address the nation's workforce crisis.
Does Business Have a Role in Higher Education Accountability?
As a leader in the aerospace industry, The Boeing Company maintains a workforce of over 150,000 worldwide, including about 35,000 engineers. In order to maintain that pool of human talent, Boeing believes systemic reform in education is essential. For the past year, the company has been collecting employee data internally and matching that to data from the postsecondary schools that have produced its workforce. It plans to use this analysis to create a ranking system showing which colleges have produced the workers it considers most valuable.

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Backed by a $500,000 grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Institute for a Competitive Workforce (ICW) will lead its members in a national, state, and local effort to strengthen science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education, reinforcing the tenets of the White House 'Educate to Innovate' initiative announced today by the president.
