Tata Consultancy Services and Discovery Education To Reach 1 Million Students through "Ignite My Future in School"
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Employment Projections, computing occupations make up two-thirds of all projected new jobs in STEM fields, yet less than 25 percent of U.S. schools currently teach computer science related courses.
This is a significant gap, and the private sector is not only implementing programs to improve these statistics, but also forming partnerships to maximize impact. A prime example of this is between companies such as Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Discovery Education, who have recently announced the launch of Ignite My Future in School initiative.
Designed to prepare K-12 students with digital skills for 21st century careers, Ignite My Future in School is a first-of-its-kind initiative that leverages computational thinking and new teaching resources as a catalyst to transform the way K-12 students learn across America. The ultimate goal behind this program is to engage 20,000 teachers and one million U.S. students by 2021. Since launch, 10 U.S. school systems – with more than 6,700 teachers and 194,000 students – have joined the effort as early adopters of this transdisciplinary approach.
Additionally, TCS and Discovery Education have launched an online program, TECHademy, which will engage teachers nationwide in an exclusive, cost-free, virtual professional development experience that includes curriculum resources, eLearning courses, webinars, and more.
In less than five years, there will be one million more jobs requiring computer science skills. At the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, we’re proud to share what the private sector is doing to help ensure youth have the support and skills they need to succeed in 21st century careers.
