Hiring Our Heroes Reaches Veterans and Military Spouses Here and Abroad

As each day goes by, I never stop being amazed at how the Hiring Our Heroes program and the team continue to develop in ways that would have been unimaginable when this initiative got off the ground.

Since HOH’s inception in 2011, we have hosted nearly 900 hiring events across the United States as well as internationally, helping businesses connect with hundreds of thousands of veterans. As part of the Hiring 500,000 Heroes campaign, companies have hired more than 450,000 veterans and military spouses.

But our work is not done, and we continue to look for ways to improve our program and build on our success. One of our key observations over the years is that far too many veterans and spouses have been starting the networking and job-seeking process too late in their transition. We have seen that in almost all cases, the further “left of transition” the start, the better position they will be in to accomplish their ultimate goal of finding meaningful employment.

That is why last year HOH, in coordination with government agencies, military commands, and local chambers, and with the support of influential leaders in the private sector, launched a series of on-base military veteran and spouse transition summits.” The goal of these summits is simple: to educate and motivate transitioning service members and spouses long before their separation is put into motion.

At these transition summits, veterans and spouses have access to a multitude of services and resources all packaged together in one place. Job seekers are able to register with our online platforms, attend workshops to learn more about what to expect during the transition phase, practice interviewing and have their resumes reviewed by professionals, and participate in a full-on hiring fair as a concurrent part of the event.

To ensure that we reach service members and spouses who are serving overseas, we recently hosted a transition summit in Italy and will be hosting summits in Japan and Germany later this year. All told, we will have 21 transition summits this year in the United States and around the globe. What started as a new and untested concept in 2014 is now becoming a huge factor in our success and mission accomplishment.

We’re continuing to move along proudly in our mission to make sure that every veteran and military spouse who wants to make a successful transition is able to do so. I encourage you to learn more about our transition summits and view a full list of our hiring fairs.
