Standout Environmental Projects on the Business for Good Map

BCLC’s Business for Good Map is a great resource for discovering how leading companies are making impacts in communities both here in the United States and around the world. Lately, we’ve seen a large increase in projects on the Map, highlighting exciting projects from a wide range of companies. Many of these projects relate to environmental challenges. Here are a few examples of outstanding projects I’ve noticed recently: 

  • Dow’s Gas to Energy project – Dow has partnered with the City of Midland (where the company is headquartered) to divert natural gas created by the city’s landfill towards energy production for Dow’s Corporate Center. By doing so, Dow will meet 50% of the Corporate Center’s energy requirements and will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 12,000 tons (the equivalent of taking 20,000 cars off the road!). 
  • Alcoa’s Ten Million Trees initiative – Alcoa has begun an ambitious initiative to plant ten million trees by 2020. Going well beyond the plantings associated with routine site remediation, the program aims to engage every Alcoa employee in the process. Employees dictate which type of trees to purchase at each site location as well as where these plantings can make the most impact. Once planted, the ten million trees will absorb more than 250,000 tons of carbon per year. 
  • Southwest’s New Green Plane Interiors – Southwest debuted the new Evolve interior for its Green Plane fleet in early 2012. The new seats, while being more durable, weigh six pounds less than the old models, which will allow Southwest to save 4 million gallons of jet-fuel per year. The seat covers are made of E-leather, an eco-friendly alternative to traditional leather. And the interior carpet is produced by InterfaceFLOR, a well-respected environmental leader in the carpet industry. 
  • Hershey’s Cocoalink program – In an effort to expose more of its small cocoa farmers in Ghana with the most sustainable and efficient growing practices, Hershey has implemented the cutting-edge Cocoalink program. The program sends practical information to farmers through voice and SMS text messages. So far, the program has connected over 8,000 farmers with better information and is looking to expand to 100,000 farmers over the next three years.
