Next Generation of Business Leaders Focus on the Role of Business in Society

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, in partnership with FedEx Freight, announced the three finalists for its fourth annual 2019 MBA Case Competition. This year’s contest challenged teams of graduate students to think deeply about what businesses bring to a community and the significant impact when a company comes into town or moves out.

The finalists are: University of California, Irvine’s Paul Merage School of Business, Michigan State University’s Broad College of Business, and Rice University’s Jones Graduate School of Business. These finalists were selected from a pool of 85 teams from 44 business schools.

They will compete for the top prize on November 11, 2019, at U.S. Chamber headquarters in Washington.

“The entries we received this year were truly remarkable,” U.S. Chamber Foundation President Carolyn Cawley said. “These are the business leaders of tomorrow, so it’s reassuring to know that they recognize the role of business in society, and the positive impact these businesses can have in the communities we call home.”

The competition aims to shed light on the importance of the presence of businesses to a community. Teams of business students from across the country responded to the call to consider how to engage leaders to prevent businesses from being incentivized to leave a community.

This year’s competition will include a keynote address by Lance Moll, senior vice president of operations at FedEx Freight. The teams will be judged by a panel of experts: Suzanne Clark, president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce; Jeff Greer, senior vice president of human resources for FedEx Freight; Tracci Schultz, senior vice president of strategic planning, engineering and operational solutions at FedEx Freight; and Paul Argenti, professor of corporate communication at Dartmouth University’s Tuck School of Business.
