Catalyzing Mitigation Investments

Every segment of our society, from individual to government, industry to philanthropy, must be encouraged and empowered with the information it needs to prepare for the inevitable impacts of future disasters. The entire nation must work as a team to increase pre-disaster mitigation in communities—this includes individuals, communities, and businesses managing risk. We need to bring resilient mitigation investments forward to lessen the impact of disasters and look to close the insurance gap to ensure everyone can recover more quickly. The National Institute of Building Sciences released this year that for every $1 spent in preparedness provides society with on average $6 savings. Everyone can and should play a role in preparing themselves, their community, and their place of work.

Business Helping Business—Supporting Small Businesses Immediate Recovery

A challenge that continues to echo following disasters is the difficulty small- and mid-sized businesses have recovering. Resources are limited, staff are personally affected by the damage, and revenue streams are disrupted. However, even during these difficult times, some businesses step up and support one anther because they know that getting local businesses back up and running is one of the main ways to reinvigorate a community. What programs and mechanisms can companies put in place to provide the resources necessary for recovery?

Once the disaster has passed and all that stands is the devastation, how do you know the division of responsibility between federal, state, and municipal levels? How does a multi-national corporation organize it’s response between its headquarters and local presence? This session will explore how the different sectors communicate and information is shared at the right level. Also how response is coordinated from corporate giving to business continuity.

Creating Private Sector Playbooks to Facilitate Better Coordination

Understanding the roles and responsibilities that the private sector can and should take during a disaster requires external coordination with local government and their federal partners. During this working session, attendees will participate in an exercise that will help shape a “play book” industry leaders can reference during times of disaster to better understand how to collaborate and quickly respond.

Industry leaders have come together around critical infrastructure and created a playbook for private sector response around energy, infrastructure, and communications. How can we learn from their example and apply similar processes across industries and business to business partnerships?

Leveraging Non-Traditional Technology Services during Disasters

One of the biggest challenges when responding to a disaster is the ability to quickly identify and utilize non-tangible resources in disaster areas. This missed opportunity could improve disaster response and assist with relief efforts. Join attendees from the private sector, state, local, and federal governments, and nonprofits, by applying your knowledge and experience to help shape what a disaster response capability matching tool could look like and how it could function. Information gathered from this workshop will help to define requirements for a capability matching tool that can be leveraged during future disaster simulations and ultimately disaster response by state, local, and federal governments.

Coordination Through Communication

Effective corporate communications during all cycles of a disaster—but especially immediately following—can make a significant impact in the recovery process. From educating employees to not self-deploy to understanding the best ways to support the victims, leveraging corporate communications can help employees know how to best engage. In 2017, it became even more complex as companies were supporting the response to several disasters simultaneously in different geographical locations. This workshop will facilitate discussions among participants around drafting communication plans for your organization.

The recent disasters also brought to light the challenges that increased social media activity can have during times of disaster. At times, social media saved people’s lives, but other times it provided false information. As a company, understanding how to best use social media to get out your message is only going to become more important. This can be particularly true as you are communicating with your customers and community.

The Department of Defense is often called upon to support another lead Federal Agency during a manmade or natural disaster. This mission is called Defense Support of Civil Authorities. The 2017 Hurricane Season provided a number of good lessons learned to prepare for future disaster response operations.
