Hurricane Laura made landfall early on August 27 but the amount of devastation is still being assessed. Currently there are nearly 6,000 homes declared either heavily damaged or destroyed with estimates predicting a total of 10,000 – 15,000 homes affected. As of September 1, there are more than 360,000 residents without power and utility services—including electricity—projected to take 8-12 weeks before being fully restored.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation hosted a second coordination call to hear from state officials in Louisiana and Texas on the most recent updates, as well as nonprofit partners who have been on the ground to support relief and recovery efforts. Participants shared information on the gaps that exist in critical resources and challenges they are facing as they respond to this historic hurricane.
