U.S. Army veteran Quinton Ward awarded a New Kenworth T680 Truck

WASHINGTON, DC —The U.S Chamber of Commerce Foundation's Hiring Our Heroes, in partnership with Kenworth Trucking and FASTPORT, today announced Werner Enterprises truck driver and U.S. Army veteran Quinton Ward as the winner of the 2018 Transition Trucking: Driving for Excellence Award. Ward received a new T-680 truck, donated by Kenworth.

“I’d like to thank all the companies that are here today, and to all of the companies around the country that are recognizing veterans,” said Quinton Ward. “It’s just been a whirlwind and I am so happy to showcase what veterans can do out here.”

Born into a military family at Fort Polk, La., Ward is a retired Sergeant with six years of active duty service in the United States Army. He now happily resides with his service dog in Fla. Quinton was nominated for the award by his current employer, Werner Enterprises.

“Following a distinguished military career, Quinton leveraged his skills to successfully launch a second career in the trucking industry,” said Eric Eversole, president of Hiring Our Heroes and vice president at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. “We are honored to have had a helping hand in helping Quinton continue on the road to success and congratulate him for winning this year’s award.”

"Congratulations to Quinton Ward for his selection as the winner of the Transition Trucking: Driving for Excellence Award," said Kurt Swihart, Kenworth marketing director. "We are honored with this opportunity to thank him for his years of service in the United States Army and his dedication to become an inspiration to other professional drivers in our industry. We are confident that the Kenworth T680 Advantage will help him get on the right road to continue his promising career in trucking."

The four finalists considered for the Transition Trucking award were:

  • Mordaunt “Platt” Barber, U.S. Marines and U.S. Navy veteran, TMC Transportation
  • Summar Hanks, U.S. Air Force and U.S. Air National Guard veteran, US Xpress
  • Quinton Ward, U.S. Army veteran, Werner Enterprises
  • Christopher Young, U.S. Army veteran and active U.S. Army Reservist, Stevens Transport

"I have no doubt that many of today’s Transition Trucking award finalists can tie a great number of their successes in the trucking industry to their military training, in some way. This gives us even more evidence that the military hardwires our veterans to excel in trucking, and industry-leading companies are uniting to attract and employ these remarkable candidates," said Brad Bentley, FASTPORT President. "A special congratulations to Quinton as well as Chris, Platt, and Summar who have set incredible examples of what veterans can accomplish after they transition from the military into civilian careers."

First Launched in 2016, the annual Transition trucking Driving for Excellence campaign is focused on curbing the emerging truck driver shortage and inspiring more companies to hire more veterans, National Guard members, and reservists into the trucking industry. Throughout the year, trucking companies nominate veteran military drivers with outstanding performance. Following a public vote on nominees, an independent selection committee comprised of individuals from the trucking industry selects three award finalists.
