ExxonMobil Partners with Reasoning Mind to Provide Ground-Breaking Math Curriculum

Picture this: upon returning from school, your child willingly shirks his video games in favor of his math homework. Not only does he finish the problems quickly and accurately, he does so with a smile on his face and a growing passion for all things mathematical. Think this is just a fantasy? Not so – this is quickly becoming a reality for parents whose children are enrolled in Reasoning Mind (RM), an Internet-based interactive math program that addresses the growing need for excellent math and science education in America’s schools. Reasoning Mind and one of its primary funders, the ExxonMobil Foundation, recognize that our future workforce needs an improved science and math education in order to maintain its role as a leader in today’s increasingly competitive global economy. The Reasoning Mind program combines modern technology with a challenging, internationally competitive curriculum to dramatically increase students’ proficiency in math. Results show that students who are enrolled in the Reasoning Mind program improve comprehension and performance on math assessments, and increase reading comprehension, independence in learning, and non-standard thinking abilities.

Reasoning Mind partners with schools to provide high quality professional development for teachers and ongoing support for schools using the program as its primary or supplementary curriculum. Designed for children in grades 2-7, each child works independently at a computer with a teacher facilitating the learning sessions and working with students on their areas of need. RM’s curriculum is highly interactive, adjusting the difficulty of each problem based on the student’s skill level. It also recognizes and addresses gaps in student's knowledge. Combining online and face-to-face instruction encourages the student to challenge himself in a comfortable, engaging environment. Students may also access the program from any internet-enabled computer, and online tutoring is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Parents of students who attend schools not using Reasoning Mind may purchase an individual subscription to the program.

“The news of continuing decline in math achievement among U. S. students is a call to action we cannot ignore,” says Gerald McElvy, president of the ExxonMobil Foundation. “The nation must undertake steps to increase the numbers of students possessing the proficiencies needed for a competitive workforce in a global economy. The ExxonMobil Foundation believes that Reasoning Mind is an effective intervention, and can be brought to national scale quickly and affordably.”
