Problem
In 2020 and 2021, the healthcare industry experienced unprecedented staff shortages and high turnover rates. Many healthcare workers, including those at Reid Health, were also struggling with the sudden closure of schools and daycare centers, leaving them without reliable childcare options. This dual pressure of an intense work environment and childcare instability led to significant employee burnout and a further exodus of talent. Reid Health viewed an on-site childcare center as a strategic and urgent response to this crisis.
Solution
Reid Health opened an on-site childcare center in 2021 in its Richmond, Indiana, hospital. It serves children from six weeks to five years old, matching employees’ needs for infant and toddler care. Key elements include a dedicated nursing mothers’ room for staff convenience, an indoor play space, and secure access for parents visiting during breaks. KinderCare, a childcare operator, handles the center’s administration—including staffing and childcare curriculum.

Replication Tips
Partner with experts: Reid outsourced childcare operations to KinderCare—a smart move for employers without in-house childcare expertise. Other employers can similarly contract established childcare providers.
