Problem

Horizon Media, a company based in both New York City and Los Angeles, was experiencing an issue with a growing parent population in its company, and childcare responsibilities began competing with career growth. Horizon needed a childcare benefit for its employees that was flexible in cost and scope, broadly accessible and scalable to different ages and their whole population of working parents, and they needed something that was nearby and offered high quality care.

Solution

Vivvi, a childcare provider that offers both center-based care and in-home care options, partnered to give Horizon employees a comprehensive childcare benefit package in order to improve worker retention and productivity. This package included subsidized full-time care for parents returning to work, fully subsidized emergency backup care for Horizon families, and education and community initiatives that align with parent needs and the Horizon culture.

Results

  • Beneficiary Impact
Helped strengthen Horizon Media’s reputation as being a top workplace for women and working parents
  • Employee Impact
100% retention rate for mothers enlisted in the program, and 95% of available backup days offered ended up being used
  • Financial Results
Horizon Media received a 13.6x return on investment for the backup care days provided, and a $500,000 return on investment for full time care

Replication Tips

  • Start by identifying local childcare providers in your area, especially those close in proximity to your office. Contact them and inquire about the creation of an employee-sponsored childcare and learning benefits package for various care options.
  • Create a pilot program to gather feedback and make necessary changes.
  • Provide flexible care options: backup care at centers, in-home care, and virtual tutoring, allowing employees to choose what fits their needs.
  • Offer subsidies for this childcare to make it cheaper for employees to enlist in the program.
  • Highlight retention, productivity, and inclusivity benefits to employees to increase enrollment and improve return on investment.
