Overview

Otter is a technology-enabled solution that matches working parents in need of childcare with stay-at-home parents or other caregivers in their community who can provide care in a home setting.

Key Impact Metrics

  • 3.5K
stay-at-home parents recruited to provide childcare in the first six months
  • $20M
earned by childcare givers in 2021

Problem

The U.S. faces a severe shortage of licensed childcare slots, especially for infants and toddlers—a crisis made worse by the pandemic, when thousands of centers closed. Many parents, especially mothers, have been forced out of the workforce because they cannot find or afford daycare. This is the exact problem that Helen Mayer faced in 2020. This problem led her to found Otter.

Solution

Otter was launched in October 2020 to provide an online platform to facilitate peer-to-peer childcare. Parents in need of care sign up and are matched with vetted stay-at-home parents or other local caregivers who have the capacity to take in extra children. The platform handles matchmaking based on location, parenting style, and scheduling needs.

Results

  • Beneficiary Impact
    7,000 children provided care
  • Employee Impact
$600 earned per week by at-home caregivers
  • Financial Results
$20 million collectively earned by caregivers in 2021

Replication Tips

  • Implement trust and safety measures: Require background checks, references, and perhaps training for caregivers. Incorporate features like secure check-in/out and emergency contacts.
  • Balance supply and demand: Kickstart a new area by recruiting a pool of caregivers before marketing to parents. One strategy is to tap into local parent neighborhood initiatives to find interested stay-at-home parents/grandparents. Offer incentives for early sign-ups on both sides (e.g., referral bonuses or first-use discounts).
  • Ensure caregiver support and fair pay: Set guidelines or minimum rates so caregivers receive fair compensation (Otter’s model guarantees pay even for cancellations).

Suggested Implementation Timeline

~10-18 months
