Problem
Benton Harbor is a small city in southwest Michigan that had very limited childcare capacity relative to need. This scarcity made it difficult for working parents, including Whirlpool employees, to find reliable, affordable, and high-quality childcare options. Whirlpool recognized that childcare barriers were affecting employee satisfaction and retention.
Solution
Whirlpool partnered with KinderCare Education to develop The Eddy, an $8 million employer-sponsored child development center on its global headquarters campus. The facility was designed to be high-quality and conveniently located for employees. Whirlpool provides a subsidy to reduce tuition for employees; while parents still pay, the cost is lower than the market rate for similar quality. The center also aligns with Whirlpool’s commitment to community development and diversity, enabling more women to remain in the workforce and setting a model for other local businesses.
