OSI Pharmaceuticals Partners with Abilities to Provide Job Preparation for Persons with Disabilities

The OSI Pharmaceuticals Foundation, Inc. has partnered with Abilities, Inc. to train and hire workers with disabilities. Launched in 1993, the Abilities Laboratory Assistant Training program aims to address the entry-level staffing needs of various laboratories in the New York City and Long Island area by offering short-term laboratory training to individuals with disabilities.  With their education complete, students are prepared to enter positions in environmental, clinical, pharmaceutical, or research laboratories. Abilities Inc. also provides help with job placement to give job-searchers with disabilities an opportunity to expand their vocational horizons.

OSI Pharmaceuticals has taken a particularly important role in the program as a partner company, regularly sending employees to Abilities to conduct practice interviews with trainees to help them prepare for future job interviews. Additionally, OSI hosts two interns per class for a week at their laboratory facilities in Albertson, New York to allow them to shadow OSI employees and apply what they have learned in the classroom to real world experiences. Recently, the OSI Pharmaceuticals Foundation provided a generous donation to help support the renovation and expansion of the classroom, including updated technology needed by graduates to be competitive in the workforce. Having already replicated the program in New Jersey, OSI Pharmaceuticals believes that the Abilities program is highly replicable elsewhere and is willing to jointly assist companies to develop similar programs.

"The relationship between Abilities and OSI has been a win-win for their students and our employees," says Ann McDermott-Kave, Director of the OSI Pharmaceuticals Foundation. "We are proud to be so strongly affiliated with the Laboratory Assistant Training Program and look forward to helping the program thrive and grow."
