Senior Communications Officer, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
Beth Toner, MJ, RN, senior communications officer, has more than 24 years of experience in marketing and corporate communications. She is also a registered nurse with clinical experience in long-term care and community health settings.
In her current role, Toner provides communications support for several areas of focus at the Foundation. She helps provide strategic communications support to investments in projects and programs designed to give all in our society an equal opportunity to pursue a healthier life, to equip 21st-century leaders from all sectors to help build healthier communities and practices, and to engage businesses across a wide variety of industries to help build a Culture of Health. Toner finds her work at the Foundation to be the perfect blend of her two passions: communications and health care. “I chose nursing as a second career because I care deeply about making a difference in the lives of people when they are at their most vulnerable,” she said. “This role allows me to do that in a systemic way, too.”
Toner joined the Foundation in 2012 from The Hartford, where she was director of marketing initiatives for the Advanced Markets Group. As part of that team, she coordinated marketing efforts designed to educate financial advisors and consumers about the needs created by increasing longevity. She also coordinated the development of educational and marketing materials based on The Hartford’s collaborative work with the MIT AgeLab.
Prior to her work with The Hartford, Toner was a senior web content developer for The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. She has also served as a multimedia communications specialist for the University of Pennsylvania Health System and a public relations coordinator for Harleysville Insurance.
Toner holds an associate of applied science in nursing from Delaware County Community College, a bachelor’s degree in communications from Messiah College, and a master of journalism degree from Temple University.
Born in Detroit, Toner currently lives in Elverson, Pa., with her husband, Joe, and their son, Joseph, while their adult children make their way in the world. She volunteers twice a month as an RN volunteer at a free clinic in West Chester, Pa. She enjoys hiking and camping with her family. Until her knees wore out, she completed 22 marathons. She is also an avid fan of all things Star Trek, having published a short story in the Pocket Books anthology Strange New Worlds VI.
