Carlson is responsible for managing the development and execution of Walmart’s enterprise wide sustainability strategies for its own operations includes more than 11,000 facilities and massive trucking fleet worldwide. Carlson leads the company’s global policies and approach to addressing climate and emissions, advancing energy efficiency, scaling renewables, improving refrigeration, eliminating solid and organic waste, increasing water stewardship and conserving land and habitat. Carlson works closely with the various real estate, operations and logistics teams in the US and over 13 international markets to ensure the proper resources, processes and controls are in place to execute against public commitments while continuously driving out costs and reducing risk for the business. Carlson also leads the company’s annual CDP disclosures and played a central role in the development of its science based emissions reduction target covering Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, making Walmart the first retailer to achieve this recognition. Carlson started in real estate at Walmart before moving to his current role two years ago. Before coming to Walmart, Carlson worked in various roles related to product supply chains, the built environment, renewable materials and aerospace technologies. Carlson is a LEED A.P. and holds a M.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering and B.S. in Mechanical Engineering.
