Sydney oversees implementation for the company’s trade initiative, on purpose. on purpose, teaches a group of 150+ local artisans in Masoro, Rwanda to become a profitable supplier to kate spade new york and Jack Spade. Since implementation began in 2013, the supplier has grown from 20 independent artisans, to a for-profit social enterprise employing 150+ local Rwandans, 98% of whom are women. These artisans are also the owners of the business.
Sydney created the on purpose model, which seeks to integrate the Rwandan artisans into the company’s supply chain as a true manufacturing partner. This model commits the resources necessary to help the manufacturing partner gain independence and function at a high level in the global marketplace. Sydney and the CSR team, work directly with the manufacturer to ensure quality, compliance and production are up to global standards. The model has been developed to be replicable for other industries and other countries.
Additionally, she oversees product design for Rwanda-made products, as well as managing training programs that will allow the artisans’ business to grow and work with other fashion companies.
